Prestigious Talk at the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM):
Growing up in a small village, I often asked myself: Who will I become?
Would I follow in my parents’ footsteps and become a farmer?
Or would I be the teacher my primary and secondary school teachers had predicted I’d become?
Becoming an engineer was, in many ways, an unexpected but pleasant “surprise.” It was made possible by the encouragement of my teachers, the STPM results I worked hard for, and the scholarship support from Yayasan Sarawak.
My years in manufacturing plants shaped me deeply. They taught me that theories are only powerful when they meet the realities of the shop floor. Later, my journey in higher education revealed something even greater—the power of purpose and impact in making learning meaningful.
That is why I feel truly honoured to be invited to deliver a Prestigious Talk at the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), part of the Academician Dato’ Ir. Prof. Dr. Chuah Hean Teik Engineering Education Prestige Lecture Series.
🙏 My sincere thanks to Ir. Prof. Dr. Jeffrey Chiang Choong Luin, President of IEM, and Ir. Ts. Dr. Ir.Ts.Dr.Dhakshyani Ratnadurai, Chairman of the Engineering Education Technical Division, for this meaningful opportunity.
In my lecture, “Nurturing Purposeful Engineers through Purpose-led and Impact-driven Learning,” I shared my hope for the future of engineering education in Malaysia—broad-based, personalised, multidisciplinary, and above all, purpose-led and impact-driven.
Because I believe a better world is possible—one where engineers don’t just solve technical problems, but lead the way in championing societal progress. 🌍
